  • don't drop your trans. just like Ron said, do your rod bearings first, then loosen all of your main caps and get them hanging on the bolts. one by one replace the bearings, I didn't event have to rotate the crank I just used a small flathead screwdriver and sliped out the top bearing then sliped the new one back in. put the cap back on with out snugging it up and move to the next one. Once all the bearings are replaced torque the main caps starting from the center and then working out from there. easy as pie. you wont get to do the rear seal but if it is not leaking your golden. if it is leaking you have to pull the trans. Good luck.

Good luck. yep, it was actually VERY easy. dropping the diff and oil pan were way harder than actually replacing the bearings. it actually only took me a couple hours, to replace all the mains (already had the caps off), and put the oil pan back on.

  • I did this with my 89 22R, in my driveway, also replaced rod bearings while it was apart. Piece of cake! You would by some fluke chance happen to have a picture of this would you?

That's actually a good thing because you don't have to deal with individual bearing races the way you do when servicing a two-piece caged (also called tapered) front wheel bearing. And there's no annoying cotter pin to deal with. (Watch for an upcoming Saturday Mechanic discussing these types of bearings.) Also, replacement sealed bearing hubs come prepacked with grease from the manufacturer more often than not, so there's less mess. What's bad is that sealed wheel bearings typically cost more, generally require more disassembly of driveline components, and may require a hydraulic press to remove and install.

Yes they are different sizes the inner is larger and the outer is smaller. In this picture the outer is on the left and the inner is on the right. One thing i would like to add is, when you pound out the races make sure you rotate the areas in which you are pounding. For instance pound the top side of the race a few times, then the right side, then the bottom side, then the left. The races will come out much easier that way, but they are still a pain and a half to get out, so be patient.

Wheel bearings replacement is also a necessity, however, as they do wear out, particularly if they're damaged or not properly maintained. Heat and water are enemies of a wheel bearing, and even though most modern wheel bearings are sealed, damage to that seal can allow water to enter, leading to a loss of lubrication, increase in heat, and premature failure.

One indication that a wheel bearings replacement job is in your vehicle's future is the appearance of wheel bearing noise. That noise could be an early warning that a wheel bearing is about to fail. It might start out as a faint noise that increases in speed with the vehicle, and over time becomes louder. Depending on whether you're doing the job yourself or having a trusted mechanic do it for you, the wheel bearing replacement cost isn't the biggest expense – it's the labor involved with removing and replacing the wheel bearings, which also requires specialized tools.

First, open the door with the garage door opener. The opener will hold the door open as you replace the end bearing plates. We also replace the bearings with the door open because there is only about a turn of tension on the garage door springs.
